I sat at a small table on the basketball court of the Santa Rosa Plaza. Around me was a group of individuals who all laughed and discussed the success of the nights event. That night Marked the second night of the Camp Jansson’s Tournament. 6 Muay Thai fights lay behind us for the evening, along with a Thai Sparring Demonstration performed by Jay-R (a fellow team mate) and myself. Like the pervious event that offered us exciting bouts in Boxing, the day had begun with the hot sun and we running around with our heads cut off.

We began both days at about 1 or 2 o’ clock with the setup of our registration table and the building of the boxing ring. Everyone had a part to play and helped out in their own way to insure the events were a success. Being in the Philippines it is needless to say that we were running late. The turnout for the competitors and the audience looked bleak as we inched closer and closer toward our scheduled time; but as we ran later and later the more people showed up until we had a packed house on our hands.

I was so busy working out the logistics of the entire thing that I hadn’t even noticed. Shortly after the first few matches had passed David hit the stage with a couple of t-shirts in hand. As he prepared to toss the shirts into the crowd and the announcer got everyone riled up the people erupted in approval. It was that moment when you were truly able to see how many people were present for this evenings tournament. Kids and adults got to their feet as they tried to catch a Camp Jansson shirt.

We had effectively doubled our turn out from the first night of the tournament 2 days prior. The crowds cheered for their favored fighters and the competitors put it all on the line just for the sake of fighting. We had individuals from Manila, Rizal and even as far as Singapor come to compete in the tournament. As we ended the evening David smiled his big smile and it was clear that we had done our job. It gets me excited for what is to come in the next few days. Friday is our Mixed Martial Arts tournament and the following Monday, March 25th is finals night.

With still 2 more days left of competition there is many more chances to put on a great show for the people of Santa Rosa. Each moment that passes inches us closer and closer to building a successful camp. Needless to say, it’s good to be back in the Philippines; there is so much more to come and we’re just getting started!
