Monkey Business

The Monkey got out today. See there is this monkey who lives with us at the camp. He’s a small creature, with grey hair and black hands and feet. He keeps to himself usually, sometimes taunting the individuals who walk past or befriending them; depending on what sort of fruit they have to offer.

On occasion he’ll swing out and try to grab your hair, unless its me and you don’t have any. Some might even be threatened by his behaviour, but there is one thing that is certain; he’s clever, which made his escape no surprise.

I nicknamed him Monkey Business, mainly because he makes me laugh and so does that phrase, but also because I am not very clever when it comes to naming things.

On this particular day I walked by his habitat, less aware of my surroundings. I walked passed without the usual exciting squeal of his voice to greet me. I walked passed and did not see him run along the branch of his habitat. No not today, today was a different day and he made sure I knew it.

The sound of light running passed me, but as I scanned the area there was nothing to be seen. Then again, but this time it was above me. I saw a blur at first because he was running, and then he stopped and looked down on me with this mischievous look on his face. “I’m out” he said without words. “I’m out and you can’t do anything about it.” he taunted, jumping up and down before running across the rooftop.

He ran towards the edge and jumped, grabbing on to a tree branch and scaling it with ease. I stood under the trees for a few moments as I watched him be a monkey. He moved from branch to branch picking off leaves and the occasional fruit. Suddenly Monkey Business seemed like the perfect name, because his business was simply being a monkey.

He never questions it, he just wakes up every morning and is what he is. “He’s got it easy” I said to myself, and then I remembered; so do we, we just have to give that to ourselves. I moved on with the rest of my day with a smile; “Monkey Business, its not about finding yourself, just accepting it.” -Neil Dam
