“When you want something bad enough you find a way to make it happen.”
There we are in the center of Cabanatuan city at the famous Freedom Park.
These are words David utters on a daily basis, and it has become sort of credo for me and other students learning from him. “We’re looking for heart, looking for drive!” there is something chillingly distinct about the sound of David’s voice as it cuts through the warm afternoon air.
David sits with a big smile on his face as the he looks over a group of just over a dozen individuals as they lay it all out on the cement, their goal? To hopefully be apart of Camp Jansson’s Fight team.
The morning of February 9th marked our fourth tryout since we’d arrived in the Philippines and it was also the largest turn out. It was a slow start at first, with only a few individuals slowly making their way towards our registration area, but as the minutes ticked on more and more hopefuls made their way toward us; but it didn’t end there, even after we had already begun the tryouts more and more people arrived to join in and give it their all. We had people from all over the city come to out, some small, some big, men and women alike.
I’ve always believed that the heart of the human race is its greatest strength, and being in the presence of people expressing that quality always fills me with great joy. Their efforts do not go unnoticed; and their determination is an inspiration. Everyone has different goals and has different challenges ahead of them, but to excel and persevere through those challenges is our common bond.
The best parts of any Martial arts class or any athletic endeavor are the smile faces on the participants after the event. As I shake everyone’s hand and express my appreciation for their efforts they all have solemn smiles across their faces. They are tired but their smiles tell it all. Similar smiles open across the faces of many of the classes I’ve participated or lead with David in the past. “The smile is the most important part, you know you’ve done your job if you see everyone smiling.”
